Zhang in final championships

| YOKOHAMA (Japan) - OLYMPIC champion Zhang Yining of China advanced to the women's singles final with a six-set win over compatriot Liu Shiwen at the table tennis world championships on Monday. The top-seeded Zhang beat Liu 11-8, 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8 and will meet another Chinese player, second-seeded Guo Yue, in Tuesday's final at Yokohama Arena.
Guo defeated third-seeded Li Xiaoxia of China 11-8, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9 in the other semifinal. China won all gold medals on offer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is assured of sweeping the podium here in both men's and women's singles. In the men's doubles semifinals, the Chinese duo of Ma Long and Xu Xin defeated Japan's Jun Mizutani and Seiya Kishikawa 11-6, 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 to advance. Mizutani and Kishikawa settled for the bronze medal, Japan's first medal in 12 years at the table tennis worlds. Ma and Xu will play compatriots Chen Qi and Wang Hao for the title. Chen and Wang defeated fellow Chinese pair Zhang Jike and Hao Shuai 4-1 in the other men's doubles semifinal. In women's doubles, China's Dang Ning and Guo Yan defeated South Koreans Kim Kyung-ah and Park Mi-young 11-3, 11-9, 12-14, 12-10, 12-10. Kim and Park took the bronze medal. Guo and Li won the other semifinal with an 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9 win over Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana of Hong Kong. -- AP | |
