SOCCER WORLD CUP
Germany needs a goalkeeper

| FRANKFURT - GERMANY'S coaching staff is still trying to decide on a first-choice goalkeeper for its World Cup campaign, but has ruled out a return by Jens Lehmann.
'Jens Lehmann is not a topic for us. That would be the wrong signal to send to our young keepers,' Germany's goalkeeper coach Andreas Koepke said Friday in response to newspaper speculation that the former Arsenal goalkeeper may consider a comeback. Koepke said he and coach Joachim Loew are in no hurry to decide which goalkeeper to put between the posts if Germany reaches next year's World Cup in South Africa. The candidates include Hannover's Robert Enke - who will start in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein in Leipzig - Rene Adler from Bayer Leverkusen, Werder Bremen's Tim Wiese and Manuel Neuer from Schalke. 'There is no decision yet. We have some very good keepers and nobody can answer that question,' Koepke said. 'We will wait until we are convinced and then announce our decision.' Enke said he was thrilled to be back in the starting lineup for Germany. 'This is a real confirmation for me. I know there is a big fight for this position,' said Enke, who is returning from a hand injury. 'But I accept the challenge. And I hope for two wins for Germany.' Enke helped Germany to a 3-0 win in qualifying last September in Liechtenstein, which he joked had proven his credentials. 'I am for sure the right man, because I have read that I'm the only national team keeper to have not allowed a goal against Liechtenstein,' he quipped. Germany's only two previous matchups with Liechtenstein ended 9-1 in June 1996 with Oliver Reck in goal and 8-2 in June 2000 with Lehmann as keeper. -- AP | |
