30% pay rise for cricketers

| DHAKA - BANGLADESH'S cricket authority has given its players and management a 30 per cent pay rise six months after the national team lost more than a dozen men to India's rebel league, a statement said on Thursday.
In September the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) banned 13 players for 10 years after they signed up with the unauthorised Indian Cricket League (ICL), reportedly for US$200,000 each over a three-year period. BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus told AFP that board members had agreed to a 30 percent increase for players and local management. 'It was a long time coming. It's been long over due,' Yunus said. 'At the moment a top-grade player earns around 1,000 dollars a month so that will be increased by 30 per cent.' The pay rise would not apply to the team's overseas management, including Australian-born coach Jamie Siddons, he said. Yunus said the board was continuing discussions with Pakistan's cricket authorities to fix a new date later this year for Pakistan to play in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government this week announced it had banned all visits to the country by overseas sports teams following last month's mutiny in the capital, Dhaka. Pakistan were originally scheduled to play two Twenty20 matches and five one-day internationals from March 10-22. -- AFP | |
