Volvo Ocean race heats up

ERICSSON 4 extended their lead at the top of the Volvo Ocean Race standings by winning the UBS Challenge for the Singapore In-Port Race on Saturday.

Torben Grael and his men finished second and first over the two races, to add another four points to to their overall tally.

The race off the waters of East Coast Parkway marked the first Southeast Asia in-port race, and only the second in-port race of the campaign.

Grael said: 'We were a bit rusty for in-port racing. It has been (over three months) since (the last in-port race) in Alicante. So for us to go out there today and get a good result is a very good feeling.'

Puma, who led the opening race from start to finish, were second overall after finishing fourth in the next race.

Telefonica Blue - the first boat to arrive in Singapore from Kochi, India at the end of leg three, were third overall after two third-place finishes.

The teams will leave for Qingdao, China on Jan 18 and resume their 37,000 nautical-mile journey round the world. The race is expected to end in June at St Petersburg, Russia.
