Ferguson continues spat

| MANCHESTER (England) - MANCHESTER United manager Alex Ferguson has continued his spat with Ramon Calderon by suggesting the Real Madrid president is smarting from his failure to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
United successfully fended off Madrid's public efforts to sign Ronaldo during the offseason, but Ferguson is unhappy about Calderon's recent comments that he is still interested in signing the Portugal winger. 'We have the player we want. They don't have the player they would like. All that is going on regarding Calderon is to do with the fact that they couldn't get Cristiano,' Ferguson said after United's 4-3 Premier League win over Hull on Saturday. 'Calderon promised so much that he would get the lad. Some of his comments are ridiculous. There is a complete arrogance about it all.' Ferguson has been vocal with his disapproval of the way in which Madrid conducted its efforts to hire Ronaldo, with the Spanish club publicly and repeatedly expressing interest before contacting United. The United manager is not concerned that his latest criticism could affect the clubs' relationship. 'I don't care two monkeys about our relationship with Real Madrid to be honest with you,' Ferguson said. 'There was no question of Ronaldo leaving anyway, absolutely no question.' And Ferguson thinks Madrid could still be trying to get hold of Ronaldo, who has been voted player of the year by his fellow professionals and is a strong contender to win FIFA's corresponding award. 'It's possible that these are the first shots of another attempt to get him,' Ferguson said. 'They do it all the time. We're ready. We have enough ammunition ready.' -- AP | |
