| THE Singapore national women's table tennis team are on course to reach the semi-finals after thrashing Nigeria 3-0 in 45 minutes.
The only hiccup came when the Republic were cruising while they were up by 2-0. Funke Oshonaike and Cecilia Otu Offiong delayed the inevitable by taking the opening game of the doubles 15-13. But Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu recovered to win the next three games 11-5, 11-5, 11-5. Earlier, Feng Tianwei had given Singapore the lead after routing Bose Kaffo 11-3, 11-4, 11-2. Li then doubled the advantage with a 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 win over Offiong. The team will play their final group match with the Netherlands on Thursday. A win will guarantee them a place in the last four and put them in position to win Singapore's first Olympic medal in 48 years. | |
