A WOMAN watched as her husband caned her 10-year-old son 100 times to punish him for lying. The 39-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect the boy's identity, admitted to permitting her husband, 39, to ill-treat his step-son at their home on Sept 15, 2007. The husband has since served nine months' jail for caning the child about 100 times on the buttocks, arms and back. He pleaded guilty last November (08). A Community Court heard that the victim was at home at around 10pm when the accused scolded him for lying that he had taken a spelling test in school. After discussing with her husband, the accused handed over two rattan canes to him and told him to cane the victim. With the rattan canes tied together, he administered about 100 strokes of the cane on his buttocks, arms and back, causing him to suffer unnecessary physical injuries. When the boy pleaded with her to save him, she said she could not help him and that he had to accept the punishment. The caning went on for about two hours. The case was adjourned to July 28 for her lawyer to mitigate on her behalf. She can be fined up to $4,000 or jailed for up to four years or both. | |
