Labelled water products

CONSUMERS can make smarter choices on water efficient products in the market from Wednesday.

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) has introduced a mandatory water efficiency labelling for all taps and mixers, dual-flush low capacity flushing cisterns (LCFCs) and urinals.

These products will be labelled from zero to three ticks, depending on how water-efficient it is. Those that use the least water will get three ticks, while those that use a lot of water will receive a zero tick. A three-tick rather than a one-tick dual flush LCFC can save about 2,600 litres of water annually, said the PUB.

With the labelling, households will be able to make smarter decisions when buying such products and help in water conservation efforts, said PUB's Director of Water Supply (Network) Chong Hou Chun on Tuesday.

According to the PUB, 16 per cent of water consumption from a typical Singaporean household goes to toilet flushing, while 22 per cent goes to kitchen use.

The PUB requires taps and mixers, urinals and dual-flush LCFCs installed in all new developments and premises being renovated to have at least a 'one-tick' water efficiency rating. From next month, such developments must also have the dual flush LCFCs.

Last year, each person in Singapore used 156 litres of water a day. Under the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint, the target is to reduce per capita water consumption to 147 litres a day by 2020, and 140 litres a day by 2030.
