Taipei - Indie darling Crowd Lu said breakfast 'rocks' after he was named Best Newcomer as well as Best Composer at Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards in Taipei last night. 'Yeah, I'm here again!' the 23-year-old said, as he went on stage for the second time at the 20th Golden Melody Awards, seen as the Grammys of the Chinese-language music industry. 'And I still want to remind everyone to eat breakfast,' said Lu. His debut album 100 Ways Of Living was released only last year, but he already has built a following with his dorky style and whimsical songs about breakfast and toy robots. Singaporean Tanya Chua did not pull off her third win in the Best Female Mandarin Singer category, losing out to indie singer-songwriter Sandee Chen. But another Singaporean musician, Martin Tang, took home his second Best Music Arrangement award for the Joanna Wang song, As Love Begins To Mend. He had won the award in 2001 for Singaporean singer Stefanie Sun's My Desired Happiness. Mega star Jay Chou scooped the Best Male Mandarin Singer award, as well as the Song Of The Year and Best MTV awards, despite being a no-show at the ceremony at the Taipei Arena. Hong Kong singer Eason Chan won Best Mandarin Album, while Mayday was named Best Band for the third time. As this is the 20th edition of the awards, a poll was held to choose the most popular songs from each of the two previous decades. The winners were Hong Kong singer Jackie Cheung's Goodbye Kiss and Judy Chiang's Taiwanese song, Wife. Former president Chen Shui-bian, now under detention for corruption charges, apparently listens to the latter behind bars. Veteran Hong Kong pop group Grasshoppers shook things up with their trademark dance moves at the event, while veteran Taiwan singer Ouyang Fei Fei sang a medley of songs from the 1970s. Singaporean performer Stefanie Sun, who was there as an award presenter, stood out in the fashion stakes. She wowed the crowds on the red carpet before the show started with a black feather dress, which showed off her back and legs. | |
