Sales of Jackson albums up
By Lisabelle Ting

THREE fans are organising a Tribute to the King memorial event at Hong Lim Park, from 5pm on Sunday.

'Michael Jackson has been one of the most instrumental people in my life,' said Mr Suraj Uphadiah, 21, who plans to attend the pop star's funeral in the United States.

He and the other two organisers are students.

The Hong Lim programme includes screenings of music videos and concerts, lighting of candles and a sharing session where fans can talk about how the singer touched their lives.

Many, it seems, have also rushed to shops to buy his albums.

Record retailers said they have seen a big jump in sales after the shocking news of Jackson's death on Friday.

According to Mr Ali Taib, a sales associate at HMV's The Heeren branch, sales of Jackson's albums have increased by 70-80 per cent since Friday.

Already, most of the albums are sold out, with the only left in stock being Thriller 25, a 25th-anniversary reissue of the iconic 1982 album, and Invincible, which came out in 2001.

HMV has ordered new stocks which should arrive this week.

At Gramophone, a homegrown CD retailer, its Ngee Ann City branch has run out of Jackson-related CDs or DVDs, while its Bugis branch has seen sales jump by half, said Ms Jasmine Tan, a sales assistant.
