Grandma, 82, hit over money
By Khushwant Singh

SEOW Kok Hock would demand money from his 82-year-old grandmother Tan Poh Teen. When she refused, he would get angry.

The 25-year-old, who is unemployed, had assaulted her once and even threatened his father with a chopper when the older man told him to stop hassling the grandmother.

Seow pleaded guilty to both offences on Tuesday and was jailed for nine weeks.

The community court heard that he had pushed and kicked his grandmother last July in their six-floor flat in Jurong East.

He had asked her for $700 to settle his gambling debts. She refused, they quarrelled and he then assaulted her. Fearing for her safety, the elderly woman fled downstairs.

Less than a year later, they had another row.

In April this year, Seow wanted his grandmother to give him money to pay his cell phone bills. She turned him down and they had a row.

Seow's father returned home from work at that time but ignored the argument raging in the living room. He went to have his dinner in the kitchen instead.

When the quarrel died down, Seow went to have a smoke in the kitchen. There, his father reprimanded him for asking money from his grandmother.

This infuriated the young man, who picked up a chopper from the sink and threatened his father.

Police were called in and Seow was arrested.
