$40m Emas job awarded
THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Tuesday awarded a $40 million contract to ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) to expand its Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (Emas).

Emas, a live video surveillance system, was initially installed on expressways to detect and manage incidents. The monitoring system helps LTA to manage and respond promptly to congestions.

The extension of the Emas coverage from expressways to major arterial road corridors is designed to help bring about better incident management, and consequently, better traffic flow on the road network islandwide.

LTA's Transportation Chief Engineer, Dr Chin Kian Keong, said on Tuesday: 'Motorists can benefit from the extended coverage as it will help them plan their journey better to avoid congested and incident areas. This will save them time and give them a more pleasant journey.'

The contract awarded to ST Electronics is the first of a two-phase expansion programme for the Emas to 10 major arterial road corridors by 2013.

Implementation of the first phase, which will start from 2010, will cover six major arterial road corridors. West Coast Highway corridor and the Woodlands Road - Bukit Timah Road - Dunearn Road corridor, will be the first with the system by early 2011.

The remaining corridors will be installed in phase two, and are expected to begin in the first half of 2013.
