Help immigrants integrate

| WITH more new immigrants living in Punggol Central, activities were organised by the grassroots network to help them bond with Singaporeans.
A Sengkang Crickets League was set up late last year. A Filipino Community Cultural Group followed soon after. Mr Charles Chong, MP for the ward which is part of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, on Monday said he noticed a growing number of new immigrants settling in the neighbourhood since three years ago. He does not have exact numbers, but during his block visits, up to 10 per cent of residents in some blocks could be permanent residents (PR) or new citizens. Most of them hail from India, China, Philippines and Myanmar. 'They are usually very happy to be here and have settled in well,' said Mr Chong, who added a quip: 'When you ask Singaporean residents for feedback, they will complain that they have to wait more than 15 minutes for the bus. But when you ask new immigrants, they are happy that the bus comes before 30 minutes.' He was giving an update on key programmes in the constituency, ahead of a ministerial visit by Law Minister and Second Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam next month. Among them are initiatives to help locals and foreigners integrate. Noting that some of the overseas Indians were playing cricket almost every weekend, it prompted the grassroots to set up a Sengkang Crickets League.
