Bringing science to park

| SCIENCE has found a new home in a park at Bishan. An optical illusion now sits in it amidst a playground, soccer field and basketball court.
Meant to bring science nearer to people in the heartlands, the exhibit was launched at the Bishan Active Park at Street 22 on Wednesday morning MP for the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, Mr Zainudin Nordin. When the wheel of the exhibit is turned, a fascinating kaleidoscope of patterns and colours is formed, bringing to life the works of science. 'The idea is to put the exhibit in a public location to make residents interested and aware in science that is happening everywhere around them,' said Mr Andrew Oh, an assistant director at Science Centre Singapore. A similar one at the centre is popular with visitors, he said. Some curious children from the neighbouring Catholic High Primary School, an active partner of the park, have already taken to it, marvelling at the way it works. 'Wow, it is like a spider web!' exclaimed 11-year-old Jeremy Goh. The one-year-old park, popular especially for its beach volleyball court- complete with real sand- draws residents from the Bishan and Toa Payoh estates, said Mr Zainudin. He said that in future, the park might boast a sculpture designed by residents in the constituency. 'We are making this park as interesting as possible,' he said. | |
