Aung San Suu Kyi trial
'I'm well': Suu Kyi

| MYANMAR'S pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi told Singapore's envoy during a prison meeting that she was 'well and being well treated' by the ruling junta, the government here said on Wednesday.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner also told ambassador Robert Chua, who met her along with representatives from Thailand and Russia at Insein prison, that there were opportunities for national reconciliation if all parties so wished, Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement. Aung San Suu Kyi, 63, is on trial in Yangon for allegedly breaching the terms of her house arrest after an American man, John Yettaw, swam to her isolated home and stayed there for at least two nights earlier this month. 'Daw Aung San Suu Kyi informed the diplomatic representatives that she and her two housekeepers are well and being well treated by the Myanmar authorities,' the ministry said. 'Daw Aung San Suu Kyi also informed the three diplomatic representatives that there could be many opportunities for national reconciliation if all parties so wished, and that she did not wish to use the intrusion into her home as a way to get at the Myanmar authorities,' the statement said. In an unexpected move, the junta allowed Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with the ambassadors of Singapore and Russia and a senior diplomat from Thailand at the so-called 'guest house' inside the prison compound where she is being held. The pro-democracy leader faces up to five years in jail if convicted of breaching the terms of her house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 13 of the last 19 years in detention after the regime refused to recognise her party's landslide victory in elections held in Myanmar in 1990. -- AFP Read also: | |
