| A PUBLIC-SPIRITED duo on Wednesday assisted police in the arrest of a 51-year-old man for stealing a woman's handbag.
The incident took place along Henderson Road at about 6.45pm. A 32-year-old Chinese woman was sitting at a bus-stop when an unknown Chinese man suddenly snatched her handbag that was placed beside her. The suspect attempted to flee but the victim gave chase and managed to grab hold of her handbag. Her cries for help attracted the attention of two men who happened to be in the vicinity. The public-spirited duo reacted immediately and assisted in detaining the suspect. Police officers arrived soon after and placed the suspect under arrest. The victim's handbag was also recovered on the spot. Police identified the two men only as 36-year-old Mr Hu and 30-year-old Mr Ong. Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) of Police Ng Yeow Boon commended both men for their public-spiritedness. He also reminded members of public to take care of their personal belongings and to be wary of suspicious characters. The suspect was charged in court today for Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code Chapter 224. The charge carries a maximum jail term of three years imprisonment, or with fine or both. | |
