30% road tax rebate
By Diana Othman
OWNERS of commercial vehicles, buses and taxis will get a 30 per cent rebate when they renew their road tax from this Sunday.

The goverment announced in the Budget statement in January that it will extend this rebate rate for one year from July 1 to June 30, 2010.

The move - which is expected to save transport companies and fleet operators about $33 million - is part of the government's relief measures to help businesses during the economic downturn.

The revised road tax rates will be indicated on the road tax renewal notices and Giro payment schedules issued to vehicle owners.

The e-Services@ONE.MOTORING portal -www.onemotoring.com.sg- which operates between 6am and midnight daily will also present the new road tax rates.

Vehicle owners who have received road tax renewal notices or GIRO payment schedules before May 10, and renew their road tax on or after that day will pay the revised rates.

Vehicle owners who have paid the road tax for their commercial vehicles, buses or taxis based on the old road tax rates, will have the excess amount indicated in their next road tax renewal notice. This would be automatically used to offset the road tax at the next renewal.

Vehicles transferred before its next road tax renewal would also have the excess road tax paid used to offset the total transfer fees payable. The remaining road tax, including excess road tax paid, will be transferred with the vehicle to the new registered owner.

In instances where the vehicle has been de-registered, the remaining unused portion of the road tax and any excess road tax paid will be automatically refunded to the last registered owner of the vehicle.
