Crane removed
A DAMAGED crane at the Ardmore II construction site has been removed in a 22-hour operation spanning two days.

Removing the crane boom, which flipped and bent backwards at the site last Wednesday night, was done with the help of two large mobile cranes - one weighing 700 tonnes, the other 800 tonnes. Work continued yesterday to remove counter weights and the top of the damaged crane, which became tilted due to strong winds.

Poh Lian Construction, the main contractor, said the operation took place smoothly.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Manpower said planning for the recovery took time to ensure it was 'rigorous and thorough'. This was because the collapsed section of the crane was 140m above the ground and any drop could have resulted in extensive damage.

While this is the first such incident in the ministry's records, it reminded others in the industry to adhere to all safety procedures when using cranes. This includes regular checks and maintenance as well as ensuring that only trained personnel operate the cranes.

Ardmore Park Drive and Anderson Road are expected to be re-opened to traffic today and residents who were evacuated following the incident allowed to return home.
