Jos' last schools record erased

| IN LESS than two minutes and nine seconds on Thursday, the last Schools National Swimming Championships mark bearing Joscelin Yeo's name was wiped off the record books.
And the student who achieved the feat had entered the meet in less than peak condition - she had missed a week of training because of a ear infection and recovered from it only on Monday. Yet that did not stop 14-year-old Koh Hui Yu from breaking Yeo's C Girls' 200m freestyle record in her heat yesterday. The Raffles Girls' Secondary Two student clocked 2min 08.06sec to break the former three-time Sportswoman of the Year's mark of 2:09.88, which was set in 1993. That 16-year-old record - which is older than Hui Yu - is also the last meet mark to bear Yeo's name. 'I'm very happy because this was so unexpected,' said Hui Yu, who also holds the C Girls' 100m freestyle mark and has been nominated for June's Asian Youth Games (AYG). 'My personal best is about 2:06, but I was expecting at best a 2:10 today.' Another AYG-bound swimmer was also in record-breaking form yesterday. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)'s Lionel Khoo set an individual mark before helping his school to crack a relay record. The 14-year-old Secondary Two student broke the C Boys' 50m breaststroke record during his heat. He won in 30.81sec, just under the 2002 meet mark of 31.15sec. He then combined with Sean Koh (backstroke), Joseph Schooling (butterfly) and Joel Ching (freestyle) to break the C Boys' 4x50m medley relay standard. The quartet's time in their heat was 1:54.02 - just under the meet record of 1:54.12 which was also set by ACS(I). The fourth record of the day went to Raffles Institution (Junior College)'s Rainer Ng (back), Ng Jia Hao (breast), Nicholas Sim (fly) and Daniel Tay (free). They broke the A Boys' 4x50m medley mark of 1:49.04 in winning their heat in 1:48.62. | |
