Quest to raise $200k
By Goh Yi Han

QUEST: 200km around Singapore in three days.

Aim: To raise $200,000 for the Spastic Children Association of Singapore.

That's what wheelchair adventurer Dennis Kweh set out to achieve on Tuesday morning to challenge his personal endurance and help the disabled in Adventure 200.

The 47-year-old librarian wants to raise a dollar for every metre he covers in a battery-operated wheelchair to places such as East Coast Park and Shenton Way.

The money will be used to set up a clinic to train occupational therapists and cerebral palsy patients in the use of assistive technology aids such as speech devices and wheelchairs. It will also be used to buy the equipment for the centre.

Dennis, who suffers from multiple disabilities, revealed that he had tried in the past to take part in marathons, but was turned away by the organisers because of his physical condition. He is not only wheelchair-bound but also blind in one eye. Adventure 200, he said, would be a great opportunity for him to travel around Singapore and do his bit for charity.

"I have been fortunate enough in my life to have completed my education and get a stable job," he said at Tuesday's flag-off ceremony at the Cerebral Palsy Centre in Pasir Ris.

"People who suffer from cerebral palsy have multiple disabilities such as speech and hearing impairment. I feel they need more help from our society," he added.

Members of the public may contribute to the cause by making donations at www.a200.sg. They may also call 67430262 for more information.
