1,000 F1 student helpers
By Leow Si Wan
SOME 1,000 students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) will be roped in to help out in the upcoming Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

And they will not be doing this for free.

At the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ITE and the Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP) on Tuesday morning, Mr Michael Roche, the Executive Director of SGP said that these students will be paid 'market rates' for their work at the race.

The Grand Prix will take place from Sept 25 to 27.

Selected ITE students will be assigned roles within the Marina Bay Street Circuit Park, as access control officials, customer service officers or information ambassadors.

SGP first engaged about 50 students for the night race last year. Tuesday's MOU will allow ITE and SGP to jointly train and offer work to interested students at the Grand Prix for four years, starting from this year. Under this collaboration, ITE students from the Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Event Management), Higher Nitec in Business Studies (Administration) and other relevant ITE courses will be picked for this training and work experience programme.

Mr Roche said: 'We are grateful to be given this opportunity to help students achieve their educational goals, and are confident that the skills the students will gain will be put to good use when they enter the workforce. The 2009 Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix is an excellent way for students to engage with a high profile international audience.'

The MOU spells a win-win for both SGP and ITE students.

While SGP gets to fulfil its aim of integrating Singapore youths into the Formula One race, ITE students get to go through a structured three-step training programme developed by SGP, in partnership with the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and the Tourism Management Institute of Singapore (TMIS). The training includes online engagement, Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) training as well as onsite training.
