Water is central to the cleansing ritual practised when welcoming the new year in countries such as Cambodia, India, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.

The act of adorning others with dyes comes from Holi, an Indian festival. It is symbolic of giving blessings.

At Sunday's event, some of the Asian foods were on sale. The crowds also caught traditional dances by the different cultures, along with displays of ethnic costumes.

The Thai ambassador to Singapore Nopadol Gunavibool, who was at the event as a guest, said having people of different nationalities take part in such heartland activities can help them integrate into the community.

Agreeing, Tampines East Citizens' Consultative Committee chairman David Tay said: 'It allows people from different nations to understand each others' cultures and become more able to mix together.'
