By Maria Almenoar & Kimberly Spykerman
AN ELDERLY woman became the second commuter to die this year after being hit by an MRT train.

Madam Quak Han Lui, 71, was waiting for a train at the Clementi MRT station to take her to her workplace at Jurong around 6am yesterday when the incident happened.

It is understood that she felt faint and fell onto the tracks before being hit by an oncoming train.

The train driver braked immediately after hitting her but could not save her.

Trains approach the station at speeds of between 40kmh and 60kmh.

Her body was found under the third carriage. Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force were able to pull her body out from under the carriage without the use of any equipment.

She was pronounced dead at 7am. The police are investigating the case as an unnatural death and are reviewing closed-circuit television footage as part of their investigations.

Neighbours of Madam Quak, who lived in Merpati Road in MacPherson, said that she looked healthy, appeared active for her age and enjoyed gardening. Her family members declined to comment.

Yesterday's incident affected west-bound train services between Queenstown and Jurong East MRT stations, delaying 6,250 passengers for about 45 minutes.

A free bus service that stopped at the affected stations started at 6.50am.
