| SINGAPOREANS will soon be able to get real-time local weather information and forecasts via their mobile phones later this year.
In its latest bid to deliver more timely and accessible weather services to the public, the National Environment Agency (NEA) is developing Weather@SG, which gives information about the current weather and humidity levels, real-time rain areas animation as well as wind speed and directions at various locations around the island - enhanced with graphics. The one-year pilot project is a joint effort between NEA and Microsoft Singapore's real-time virtual map services. Both organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the launch of World Meteorological Day on Monday. 'We are pleased that Microsoft Singapore has taken a proactive approach by working with NEA to develop this system. We hope that our support for this partnership will spur the private sector to offer more innovative solutions to help NEA deliver its environmental services,' said Mr Foong Chee Leong, Director-General of Meteorological Services Division, National Environment Agency. Microsoft Singapore also expressed confidence in the project. 'This is yet another example of how, with some imagination and determination, we can leverage on technology to develop powerful and useful applications to enhance our daily lives,' said Ms Jessica Tan, Managing Director of Microsoft Singapore. | |
