Luo steals the Show
The Taiwanese singer is the biggest winner with three awards at the first Singapore Entertainment Awards

Perhaps it was fitting that Taiwanese pop star Show Luo stole the show at the inaugural Singapore Entertainment Awards ceremony held last Saturday at the Marina Floating Platform Grandstand.

The 29-year-old walked away with three awards, making him the night's biggest winner. He scooped the Most Popular Male Singer, Artiste of the Year and Most Stylish Hunk awards. He was also the star who got the loudest screams from the 10,000-strong crowd.

The Singapore Entertainment Awards are organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese media Lianhe Wanbao, Radio100.3, omy.sg and UW (U-Weekly).

The awards honour the top entertainment talents in Singapore and the region, and are given out for excellence in Chinese music, movies, radio and concerts.

Luo, dressed in a black shirt with black and silver jeans, said winning the Artiste of the Year award was the proudest moment in his career. Other winners included Derrick Ho, who was named Local Newcomer of the Year.

Taiwan's Aska Yang won two awards, including Regional Newcomer of the Year and Most Popular Regional Newcomer, which was voted by the public.

Hong Kong's Raymond Lam was also a hit with the audience, winning the omy Hottest Web Celeb and Most Popular HK Actor awards.

On the movies front, Jack Neo won the Outstanding Achievement Award (Movies).

While most of the awards were handed out to familiar faces, one award went to an unsung talent. Producer-arranger-music director Goh Kheng Long won the Outstanding Achievement Award (Music). His name may not be a familiar one, but he has performed with well-known singers such as Jacky Cheung and A-mei.

'Winning this award is a big encouragement, a big pat on the back for me,' he said.

No awards show would be complete without performances. The night saw a few unusual pairings, such as local band Chou Pi Jiang and director Roystan Tan doing a rap number.

Then there was songbird Stefanie Sun and a cappella group Budak Pantai, who did a remix of the popular Chinese song, Olive Tree.
