| A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy died on Monday when he was hit by a tipper truck while using a zebra crossing.
This was the third of four accidents involving children in the past week, and the sole fatality. Li Yun, a Primary 4 pupil at Pei Tong Primary School, was walking to the bus stop after school around 4.45pm, accompanied by his grandmother. As he was crossing the road at Clementi Avenue 4, he was hit by a tipper truck. His grandmother, walking behind him, escaped injury. Li Yun suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the National University Hospital. He died not long after his arrival. Li Yun was born in Singapore shortly after his family first moved here from Jiangxi province, China. His father is a researcher with the Agency for Science, Technology And Research. 'I've seen reports of road accidents on television before, but I never thought it would happen to our family,' said Li Shu, 12, his older sister who studies at the same school. She added that Li Yun, who is the second of three children, always took care when crossing the road. 'There was a road safety programme at our school a few years back,' she recalled. Pei Tong Primary School principal Tan Bee Har described Li Yun as a 'very cute' boy and said the school would give the family whatever support they needed. Li Yun's sister and his classmates would also be given counselling to help them cope with their loss, she said. Mrs Tan, 60, added that the school would address all students on Wednesday to drive home the importance of road safety, and the necessary precautions to take. The driver of the tipper truck, who is out on bail, is assisting the police with their investigations. Read the full report in Wednesday's edition of The Straits Times. | |
