Boxing in the Heartlands
By Daniel Wong
THE communal area at Block 6A Marsiling Drive became a boxing arena for the weekend, during the first National Boxing Championship of 2009, which was held right in the heartlands.

A total of 54 fighters from 10 different boxing and martial arts clubs fought in a ring that had been set by the Singapore Amateur Boxing Association (Saba), and which was graced by Health Minister Mr Khaw Boon Wan on Sunday.

The event drew crowds of supporters and attracted the attentions of passersby, and the boisterous crowd was treated to fast-paced boxing action, during which they cheered and shouted advice to their favourite boxers.

Under the strict supervision of the referees and judges, and with a medical team on hand in case of emergencies, the boxers fought their hearts out, and were all awarded for their participation.

The event, one of several planned for the year, was jointly organised by Saba and the Sembawang Zone 'A' Residents' Committee.
