Flyer fire
Probe shows no foul play
By Kimberly Spykerman
THE police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) have completed their investigations into the fire that started at the Singapore Flyer on Dec 23 and caused the world's largest observation wheel to grind to a halt for six hours.

The police and SCDF released a statement last night saying they found no evidence of foul play and that the fire, which broke out in the control board room, was accidental.

The ride had to be shut after an electrical fire caused it to stop for six hours, leaving 173 people stranded in the capsules of the wheel, 11 of whom had to be lowered by ropes.

The Flyer management has announced that work is currently under way to put in place back-up systems to ensure that the 165m-high wheel stays operational to allow evacuation, in the event of a similar breakdown.

The changes, once implemented, will be examined by expert specialists from the Conformity Assessment Body (CAB).

The police also said that the Singapore Flyer will be allowed to resume operation once the safety re-certification report is submitted by the CAB and there are no outstanding issues of concern.
