Officer charged with graft

A POLICE officer was charged on Wednesday with corruption, giving false information and illegally accessing the police computer system. Sylvester Marian, 44, was the officer-in-charge of Bedok Police Division's commercial crime squad when he allegedly accepted $5,000 from one Leong Weng Loong through another man to be lenient in his investigation against Leong. The alleged offence took place outside Paddle Too Pub at Odeon Katong in mid-2004. He is also said to have lied to an anti-graft investigator on Oct 16, 2006 that he was not informed by anyone from the police station that he had been complained of taking money. He also faces 10 charges under the Computer Misuse Act of performing unauthorised screenings to get residential addresses of his two former girlfriends and the former husband of one of them in 2005. Marian, who was represented by Mr Surian Sidambaram, was offered bail of $20,000. His passport was impounded. The case was adjourned to Jan 29 for a pre-trial conference. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or jailed up to five years for corruption. The false information charges carries a punishment of a $10,000 fine and one year. Each of the CMA charges is punishable with up to a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up to two years. | |
