Smooth clearance at complex
By Diana Othman
MALAYSIA'S new massive customs, immigration and quarantine facility, named the Sultan Iskandar Complex, was in full operation for the first time on Tuesday.

Located at the Causeway, the RM$1.3 billion (S$540 million) multi-storey facility was first opened to vehicles two weeks ago on Dec 2 for motorists to acquaint themselves with it even though immigration checks were still being carried out at the old terminal.

All immigration processing for travellers and motorists in cars, motorcycles, vans and buses were done at the new complex and the old terminal was closed.

It was also the first time when the RM$2.90 fee to enter Malaysia had to be paid with 'Touch n Go' cards, the Malaysian equivalent to Singapore's CashCard. Cash was no longer accepted.

At the complex on Tuesday, immigration clearance was smooth with as many as 30 lanes opened up for Malaysia-bound cars. The facility, built on a 113-ha site, boasts 76 lanes for cars and 100 for motorcycles.

However, the problem of congestion persisted with most motorists taking about one to two hours to get from the Woodlands checkpoint to the complex.

Although most Singaporeans think that the new facility is pleasant and "spacious", they still prefer the older terminal as the routes are shorter, more "straight-forward" and hence convenient.
