Illegal lottery - 2 jailed

TWO people who helped to operate an illegal 10,000-character lottery were jailed and fined on Friday. They were part of a group of eight arrested on Wednesday for illegal lottery collection activities in Jurong and Bukit Batok. Lor Hai Huat, 39, who was found with bets totalling almost $11,000 at a flat in Tah Ching Road, was sentenced to three months' jail and fined $30,000 for the offence. The other person was Lim Gek Hoe, 44, a mother of four, who was jailed for three weeks and fined $25,000 for a similar offence at a flat in another block at Tah Ching Road the same day. Both pleaded guilty. Like Lor who was paid $50 a day to help consolidate bets from sub-collectors, Lim was paid $1,000 a month to key in data into the computer. The bets found on her totalled $1,396. Another man, Ng Kok Hua, 45, was charged with assisting in carrying on a public lottery at a flat in Jurong West Street 71 on Wednesday. He is also alleged to have helped in carrying on Magnum lottery, a Malaysian lottery. Bail of $20,000 was offered. His case will be mentioned on Jan 7. The case against the others - Tong Tee Luang, 51, Ong Leu Kee, 52, Tiang Soon Seong, 31, Alen Tan Aik Chew, 29, and Hee Hoi Weng, 36 - were adjourned to other dates. Each of them was allowed bail of $20,000. Lor and Lim could each have been fined up to $200,000 and jailed for up to five years. | |
