Everest team to leave in Mar
SINGAPORE is sending its first ever all womens team to climb Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.

Formed in 2004, the team consists of six young women who come from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Team leader Jane Lee is a student development officer from Republic Polytechnic, while the rest of her teammates come from advertising, pharamaceuticals and military backgrounds. Over the last four years, the team has conquered peaks in China, Nepal, Tibet and New Zealand.

Their training regime is divided over 6 days a week and includes long runs, stair climbing and weight training. The girls will depart Singapore for Nepal in mid March 2009 and is expected to return home in the first week of June 2009. It will take two weeks to reach the Everest base camp, at a height of 5500m.

After that, there will be four more campsites up on the slopes of Everest before the team reaches the summit. The entire process will take about six weeks. The team will be attempting the climb from the South Col route, the same route taken by Sir Edmund Hillary when he first reached the summit in 1953.
