Seniors can go digital
By Gracia Chiang
RETIREE Betty Tee got her first camera - a gift - last month but she wants to do more than just snap pictures.

The 57-year-old has signed up for a course in digital photo-editing at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) Singapore.

'I want to make full use of my camera and be able to communicate with my niece and nephew when they talk about photography,' she said.

She was at the Silver Infocomm Day at Singapore Polytechnic yesterday, an annual event dedicated to seniors who actively use infocomm technology.

It drew more than 500 people who came to learn about tools such as Blogger, Facebook and eBay, among other highlights.

Launching two new learning centres called Silver Infocomm Junctions (SIJs), Senior Minister of State for Education and Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew said they will make 'technology and other computer services even more accessible'.

The centres are sited at the Chinese Development Assistance Council in Bukit Panjang and Marine Parade Family Service Centre. Those aged 50 and above can take courses that cost $2 to $6 an hour.

The first SIJ at the RSVP Singapore in Bishan was launched last November and has trained more than 4,000 people. Five more centres will be set up in the next two years.

Yesterday, a customised and bilingual curriculum for seniors was also rolled out to teach basic computer skills and how to shop, make transactions and publish photos online.
