| SHE's 57 and just got her first camera few months ago but that hasn't stopped Ms Betty Tee from signing up for a course in digital photo editing.
'I want to make full use of my camera and be able to communicate with my niece and nephew when they talk about photography.' The retiree was at the Silver Infocomm Day on Saturday, an annual event dedicated to seniors who actively use infocomm technology. Launching two new learning centres, called the Silver Infocomm Junctions (SIJs), Senior Minister of State for Education and Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew said this would make 'technology and other computer services even more accessible'. The two new SIJs are located at the Chinese Development Assistance Council in Bukit Panjang and at the Marine Parade Family Service Centre. Seniors aged 50 and above can take infocomm courses that cost $2 to $6 for every training hour. At the event on Saturday, a customised and billingual curriculum for seniors was also rolled out, allowing them to be trained in two areas - basic infocomm and digital lifestyle skills. Dubbed iBEGIN and iLIVE, the former has two modules in computer handling skills and online communications, while the latter has three hobby-based modules, teaching seniors how to shop for travel bargains online, make transactions, and publish photos. Courses range from three to nine hours and all SIJs will make use of these materials. Giving an update, the Infocomm Development Authority said the first centre at the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme Singapore in Bishan, launched last November, has trained over 4,000 senior citizens. | |
