| OVER 200 rail experts gathered here on Tuesday for the 15th AsiaRail International Congress at the InterContinental Singapore.
Land Transport Authority's chief executive Yam Ah Mee, in his opening address, outlined Singapore's future plans for the country's rail network. Of the $54 billion set aside for transport works, $40 billion will go to expanding the rail network and improving rail infrastructure, he said. New lines like the Thomson Line and Eastern Region Line will make it more convenient for commuters. Together with expansion of the current lines, the rail network will double from 138 kilometres today to 278 kilometres in 2020. Mr Yam also highlight targets for making train stations more accessible to the elderly and disabled and injecting contestability into the rail market. The conference, which ends on Friday, will feature key discussions on investment opportunities, safety and security systems and airport rail projects in Asia. | |
