His motorbike skidded and hit side of SMRT bus, which ran over him

BARELY half an hour after riding out of camp on Wednesday evening, Private Abdul Hadi Kamal died in a road accident along Old Chua Chu Kang Road.

The 20-year-old full-time national service (NSF) man was on his way home when his motorbike skidded and grazed the side of an SMRT bus. The bus ran over him, after he had fallen off the bike, said police.

On Thursday, family, friends and camp mates of Mr Hadi sent him off in a Singapore Civil Defence Force unit service ceremony - a ceremonial burial reserved for NSF, national service men and regulars, who die while in the line of duty.

Senior warrant officer Mohd Salleh Ali told The Straits Times that Mr Hadi was considered to be still on duty as he died less than an hour after he had left the Civil Defence Academy at Jalan Bahar.

He described Mr Hadi as a hardworking clerk who did his work responsibly.

The wake, held at the void deck of Block 414, Woodlands Street 41, was attended by more than 60 people - half of whom were Mr Hadi's former schoolmates from Marsiling Secondary School.

Mr Muhammad Fazil Yunos, who has been friends with Mr Hadi for ten years since 1999, said he last spoke to him on Monday.

'Hadi had suggested meeting up with some other friends at East Coast Park next Monday. He said he missed the times we spent going out together,' recalled the 20-year-old, who is also an NSF.

Mr Hadi's uncle, Mr Ali Mohd, said that they first heard about the accident from a friend of Mr Hadi's.

'He is an only child. It is a big loss for his parents and they are devastated,' said the 55-year-old contractor.

Friends at the wake described him as fun-loving and always the 'joker in the group'. He was also athletic and enjoyed playing sepak takraw and soccer.

Mr Hadi was remembered for his passion for motorbikes. Mr Fazil recalled that Mr Hadi's father had initially disapproved of him getting a bike license. But he eventually relented and Mr Hadi obtained his licence in Sept 2006.
