Jailed for 2 women's deaths

A FORMER SMRT bus driver who failed to give way to two women pedestrians at a road junction and caused their deaths was jailed for seven months and banned from driving for eight years on Monday.

Selvamani Kanysen alias Ganeson, 24, a Malaysian, admitted to hitting Ms Winnie Ng Kwee Lee, 44, and her colleague, Madam Liang Mee Eng, 42, at a pedestrian crossing while turning left at the junction of Bukit Batok West Avenue 2 and Bukit Batok Central on Apr 13 last year.

Both women were seriously injured and taken to National University Hospital.

Ms Ng was pronounced dead about an hour later while Madam Liang, a mother of three, died more than two months later on June 22.

Selvamani could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing any rash or negligent act.
