Star Wreck, a parody of television series Star Trek and Babylon 5, started off as a free, legal Internet download movie, and garnered over 2.9 million downloads two months after it was released.

It has also made it to terrestrial television in Finland.

Big Buck Bunny is a short 3D animation comedy about a good-tempered bunny whose day is spoiled by forest bullies - three rodents. It was made with open source software, which is free for anyone to use.

The opening night screening at the National Museum on Thursday, where tickets are available at $68, will be followed by a conference on Friday.

It is expected to focus on whether Internet TV will be the next big thing, as well as look into how communities - the public - can collaborate to produce big, popular titles too.

The Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) said in a statement that it was organising the event because 'increasingly, streaming, webcasting and video conferencing are being incorporated into mainstream business requirements'.

A recruitment fair will also be held on the sidelines of the event.
