Still touring the world

| Full impact of global economic gloom not felt yet, say travellers | |
| By Ang Yiying | |
| DEMAND for year-end travel is still strong, despite Singapore's lapse into a recession.
Thousands flocked to the Chan Brothers anniversary fair on Sunday. Most who went to the fair at the Suntec City convention centre said the economy had little or no impact on their travel plans and that they were considering or buying packages for the end of year. The weakening of the Australian and New Zealand currency was a bonus for consumers looking for a good deal. Chan Brothers senior marketing communications executive Jane Chang said that enquiries on tours to Australia has doubled in the past two weeks. Friends Jordane Lee, 31, a fashion buyer, and Gwen Lo, 40, an administrative officer, said they were keen on Australia as a year-end travel destination. Ms Lee said: 'The weather now is very good. The currency is also very attractive.' Many also said they had not felt the impact of the economic downturn yet. Mrs Lily Qwek, personal assistant, 45, felt that only those who had invested heavily in the stock market would be affected. Mrs Mary Poh, a 47-year-old homemaker, gestured to the crowd in front of the booths and said: 'Where got economy not doing well? I don't believe it. I was quite alarmed by the number of people who turned up.' But in an indication of the gloom times, a few did say they were watching their wallets more carefully. | |
