Homes more energy conscious
By Jessica Lim

SINGAPORE households are becoming more mindul of energy efficiency, if recent figures from SP services are anything to go by.

Figures released by the National Environment Angency (NEA) on Friday showed that energy conumption went down almost 4 per cent from May to August , compared to the the same period last year.

In particular, the month of August recorded the sharpest drop of more than 8 per cent against figures a year ago.

The fall in electricity consumption came after the launch of NEA's five-year, 10 per cent Energy Challenge campaign in April.

Households in five room flats recorded the highest drop in average monthly consumption, followed by private apartments.

Commenting on the trend, NEA's chief executive officer Lee Yuen Hee said: 'It takes time t change habits so we are encouraged by the drop in average consumption numbers. Singapore households are beginning to realise the twin benefits of how energu efficiency helps them safeguard the environment as well as money.'

NEA said the campaign has succeeded in raising public awareness on what they can do to save energy.

Up ahead, the NEA will step up efforts to promite energy efficiency by exploring joint programmes with other government agencies in targeting energy usage in homes.
