Ex-Senegal consul jailed, fined
By Elena Chong
THE former honorary consul of Senegal was jailed for eight weeks and fined a total of $40,000 on Wednesday for allowing the consulate office to be used as an illegal gambling den.

Sujono Kusni alias Benny Kusni, 38, who is not working now, was also fined another $24,000 on eight Immigration Act offences.

The Indonesian and Singapore permanent resident could have been fined up to $50,000 and jailed for up to three years for the gambling offence.

Honorary consuls are not entitled to diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The case came to light when The Straits Times went undercover to investigate the nocturnal activities on the premises of the Senegal consulate in Nov 2006.

About 30 people were arrested when police raided the illegal casino at Lau's Arcadia on East Coast Road and seized, among other exhibits, $106,536.

Kusni had 13 other charges, including profiting $23,304 from the illegal gaming business, taken into consideration by District Judge Chia Wee Kiat on Wednesday.
