Child abuse victims get help
IN A sign of the Government's growing commitment to helping victims of child abuse, a revised manual on managing child abuse was launched on Thursday.

It was officially unveiled at the National Family Violence Networking Symposium. The theme for the annual event is From the Lens of a Child: Breaking the Cycle of Intergenerational Violence.

The manual on Management of Child Abuse in Singapore gives the protocols and procedures that are in place for key agencies to respond effectively to child abuse.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, was guest-of-honour. The keynote speaker was Dr Pauline Meemeduma, an Australian social worker with over 30 years of experience in the area of child protection.

Commenting on the topic, Dr Balakrishnan said, 'Violence has no place in a child's life. At multiple levels, the public, private and people sector must work together to reduce if not remove the risk posed to children at home and strengthen services to enhance the resilience of children.'

The revised maual includes additional chapters contributed by the Attorney General's Chamber and the Ministry of Health. It brings together key agencies with the aim of minimising traumatic interviews with child abuse victims.

Dr Balakrishnan also handed out the inaugural Family Violence Dialogue Group Appreciation Award at the event.

Introduced this year, the awards were given out to five individuals and four teams, in recognition of good inter-agency practice.
