More help for shipyard safety

ROCKED by more than 20 accidents in shipyards here since June, workplace safety officials are getting extra help to beef up the safety of workers in the beleaguered marine industry.

The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council is looking to hire a consultant to assess the safety practices in shipyards here and teach marine contractors how to make their workplaces safer.

The consultant will have about a week to evaluate at least two large shipyards - defined as those which employ more than 1,000 workers - and 10 smaller ones with fewer than 1,000 workers each.
