Youth charity raises $100k

YOUNG singers, dancers and magicians wowed a crowd of 1,000 at a charity concert at Republic Polytechnic on Friday. The event, organised by the Chinese Newspapers Division of Singapore Press Holdings, raised over $100,000 through ticket sales. The money will be donated to the 31 beneficiaries of this year's President's Challenge. The concert featured local youths doing snazzy dance moves, performing magic tricks and showcasing their angelic voices. Local twin sister pop group BY2 drew the loudest applause from the audience with songs from their first album, which debuted in Taiwan earlier this year. The 16-year-olds are touted as Singapore's answer to Hong Kong singing sensation Twins. Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong was on hand as guest of honour of the 90-minute showcase. Launched in 2000 by President SR Nathan, the President's Challenge is an annual series of events aimed at raising funds for the less fortunate. Over $12 million was raised for nearly 50 charitable organisations last year. Visit www.pc.org.sg for more information. | |
