S$500m SIA cargo deal
By Karamjit Kaur

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) Cargo has inked a 10-year deal with Pratt & Whitney for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of engines for its 13 Boeing freighters.

As part of the $500 million contract, the United States-based engine maker will also take care of the airline's six spare engines.

All SIA Cargo's planes are powered by Pratt & Whitney's PW4000-94 engines.

In a statement on Monday, SIA Cargo's senior vice-president (sales & marketing) Tan Tiow Kor said: 'Our customers expect high service and operating standards from us. It is essential for us to partner an organization that shares our service philosophy and one that is globally known for its technical excellence in engine manufacturing and maintenance.'

Mr Tom Mayes, Pratt & Whitney's vice-president (engine centres) said: 'Fuel prices now comprise nearly half of an airline's operating cost, but effective engine maintenance and service can save money by keeping engines in operation longer.'

SIA Cargo, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SIA group, flies to 76 destinations in 38 countries.
