HE may be 88, but he has the exuberance and daring of an 18-year-old when it comes to art.

Local ink artist and 2003 Cultural Medallion recipient Lim Tze Peng is best known for his renderings of nostalgic Singaporean landscapes. Indeed, he established his art practice in the early 1950s with oil paintings of Chinese junks.

But his latest exhibition, Making Inroads, which opens at the Art Retreat gallery in Ubi on Monday, is a departure from that.

This latest series of works - 23 pieces from the private collection of the completely self-taught artist - are in the style of abstract expressionism. The subject matter: trees.
