Khairy elected Umno Youth #1
KHAIRY Jamaluddin has won the Umno Youth chief post.

The 39-year-old polled 304 votes to defeat the other two contenders for the Youth top post - Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and Datuk Mukhriz Mahatir.

The Rembau MP, who is the son-in-law of outgoing Umno president and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, takes over from Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who is vying for one of the three Umno vice-presidencies.

The new youth deputy head will be Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who defeated Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

Earlier, former deputy Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil trounced her boss Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz with her 507 votes to become the new chief.

Ms Rafidah scored a mere 280 votes.

The Wanita Deputy Chief post was won uncontested by Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim.

Those aligned to Ms Shahrizat almost made a clean sweep of the Wanita executive council (exco) seats, sweeping 16 of the 20 seats up for grabs.

Only four of those aligned to Ms Rafidah made it as new exco members.

The Wanita Umno permanent chairman post was won uncontested by Tan Sri Napsiah Omar while the deputy permanent chairman post was won by Saripah Aminahbi Syed Mohd from Penang.

This is the second time Ms Rafidah, who has helmed the wing since 1984, was beaten by her deputy.

The first was in 1996 when she was beaten by Datuk Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman by a razor thin margin of 12 votes, with Siti Zaharah getting 341 votes against Rafidah's 329. -- THE STAR/ANN
