The disciplinary committee of the United Malays National Organisation party ruled on Tuesday that Mohamad Ali Rustam violated party ethics in the run-up to the March 24-28 vote to elect office-bearers.

Mr Mohamad Ali was planning to contest the party deputy president's post. The incumbent becomes the country's deputy prime minister in keeping with party tradition.

The committee also suspended 10 officials from the party for up to three years for corruption and violation of election rules.

Incumbent Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaludin was also found guilty of breaking election rules. But Mr Khairy will be allowed to contest the wing's top post.

Former Selangor Mentri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, meanwhile, has been cleared of any wrongdoing. -- AP, THE STAR/ANN
