Boat sinks in Indonesia
JAKARTA - A CAPTAIN died and five crew members are missing after a boat sank off Indonesia's Banten province, a report said.

The body of 43-year-old Suparto was found nine hours after the vessel sank near the port in the western Java province on Saturday night, news website Tempointeraktif reported.

The Moring Jagad Samudera, which had 11 passengers on board, was pushed upwards when it was hit by high waves, the provincial police official Senior Commissioner Alex Fauzi Rasad was quoted as saying.

'When it came down, the boat sank as the waves continued to hit it,' he added.

An archipelago nation of more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is heavily reliant on sea links but is plagued by poor safety standards. -- AFP
