One-Two-Go to resume ops
BANGKOK - A BUDGET airline that operated a jet which crashed in Thailand last year killing 90 people has resumed operations after a four-month suspension over safety concerns, an airline executive said on Thursday.

From Friday, One-Two-Go will operate daily two flights to the northern city of Chiang Mai and one to southern tourist-hub Phuket from Bangkok's Don Mueang airport - now reopened after a week-long blockade by protesters.

'I will assess the situation one week after we resume operations. If passengers seem confident we will expand to recover our previous routes,' said Mr Udom Tantiprasongchai, president of Orient Thai airline, the parent company of One-Two-Go.

Other destinations previously covered by One-Two-Go are Chiang Rai, Hat Yai and Naknon Si Thammarat.

Udom said the airline had won back its licence after safety checks by the Civil Aviation department two weeks ago.

An earlier investigation had found the Thai operator had breached safety regulations by having sub-standard quality checks and submitting fake documents to the government regulator.

The airline had initially been suspended for 30 days, but that was extended three times.

The investigation followed the Phuket crash in September 2007 when a One-Two-Go MD-80 plane skidded off the runway into an embankment and broke up in flames.

Thailand's transport ministry said dangerous weather conditions were a major cause of the crash, but it would not rule out human error as another factor.

The airline's fleet now comprises four Boeing 747s and five MDX-82s.

A blockade of Don Mueang domestic airport and the international Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok by anti-government protesters had prevented any flights taking off from both ports for more than a week until Wednesday.

Flight schedules began to return to normal Thursday, with full service expected to resume on Friday, Thailand's airports agency said. -- AFP
